Thinking about moving from India to the stunning landscapes of New Zealand? Here’s everything you need to know about visitor, student, work, and residence visas–with recent updates making the process smoother for Indian nationals.
Visitor Visa & Remote Work
Indian passport holders must apply for a Visitor Visa (no visa-waiver) to travel to New Zealand. This allows stays of up to six months (or nine months in special cases) and digital nomad remote work for up to 90 days, under the visitor category. The visa costs approximately NZD 341, and you’ll also pay an additional NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL).
Student Visa & Post-Study Pathways
To get a Student Visa, you need an acceptance letter from a recognized New Zealand institution, proof of funds (~NZD 20,000/year + tuition), and adequate health and travel insurance. Students in high‑demand fields like healthcare, engineering, or teaching may work up to 30 hours per week and enjoy enhanced work‑to‑residence pathways.
Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
If you receive a full-time job offer (3+ hours/week) from an accredited employer, you can apply for AEWV–often a precursor to resident visas. As of 2025, income thresholds are more flexible: employers don’t strictly need to meet the median wage rule, and minimum work experience is now two years, down from three. Interim work rights allow you to work while your visa application is being processed.
