Why is Teaching a Strategic Immigration Pathway?
In 2025, teaching will remain one of Australia’s most in-demand professions. Occupations, from early childhood to special needs educator, feature on key skilled occupation lists, including the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) and the Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). With reports estimating around 391,000 teaching vacancies over the next decade, and 25,800 job openings expected by 2026, the demand offers a substantial PR opportunity for qualified educators.
Confirm Your Occupation is Eligible
First, ensure your teaching role, such as early childhood, primary, secondary, or special needs teacher, is listed on Australia’s skills lists. These lists qualify you for skilled visa subclasses, including Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent), Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated), and Subclass 491 (Skilled Regional).
Obtain an AITSL Skills Assessment
The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) conducts mandatory skills assessments. Early childhood teachers must:
- Have a minimum four-year higher education qualification, including at least one year in early childhood education, plus a 45-day teaching placement with children aged birth to 8 years.
- If your credential wasn’t completed in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK, or the US, you must also meet the IELTS threshold- Reading & Writing: band 7, Speaking & Listening: band 8.
