Australia remains a top study destination for international students, offering world-class education, attractive post-study work rights, and unique pathways to PR. If you’re planning to turn your student visa into a permanent future Down Under, here’s your 2025 roadmap.
Start with the Right Student Visa (Subclass 500)
Your journey begins with the Student Visa (Subclass 500). This visa allows full-time study in a CRICOS-registered course, up to 40 work hours per fortnight during term, and unlimited work during break, plus the option to bring dependents.
From 1 July 2025, visa application fees rose significantly to AUD 2,000, up from early-2025 levels. The substantial increase underscores the importance of strong preparation.
Complete a CRICOS-Registered Course
To be eligible for post-study options, your course must be registered with the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
Post-Study Work with Subclass 485
Upon graduation, you may apply for the Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485):
- Post-Vocational Education Work Stream (diploma/trade): up to 18 months
- Post-Higher Education Work Stream (bachelor’s degree or higher): 2-3 years, depending on qualification.
This period serves as a critical bridge to gain work experience, strengthen your profile, and build PR eligibility.
