Australia continues to be one of the world’s most attractive destinations for civil engineers seeking permanent residency (PR). With robust infrastructure growth, a steady demand for engineering skills, and evolving immigration pathways, 2025 presents opportune times for aspiring migrants.
Why Civil Engineering Remains a High-Demand Profession
Civil Engineers (ANZSCO code 233211) hold a pivotal place on Australia’s Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), opening access to top-tier skilled visa streams. The profession is in high demand across major states, especially New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland, thanks to ongoing infrastructure expansion.
Getting Your Skills Assessed by Engineers Australia
To qualify for most visa categories, you’ll need a Migration Skills Assessment from Engineers Australia (EA), the authorized assessing authority. This involves evaluating your engineering qualifications, work experience, and competency relative to Australian standards.
As of September 1, 2024, EA updated its approach for applicants wth advanced diplomas or associate degrees. Such qualifications are now more readily accepted, especially relevant for draftsperson roles, a pathway that doesn’t necessarily require a four-year degree.
Notably, beginning July 1, 2025, EA has mandated that applicants for Civil Engineering Draftsperson (ANZSCO 312211) demonstrate:
- Sustainability and ethics in at least one Career Episode (e.g., environmental impact, energy savings).
- Recognition of part-time work experience (minimum 20 hours/week) and pre-graduation internships.
